How to Spend the Best Day in Torre Del Mar, Spain

To the east of Malaga lies Torre del Mar, a laid-back seaside town that once held a lot of importance to nearby Velez-Malaga. This small fishing village served as the port for Velez-Malaga, and it eventually grew around maritime trade, sugar production, and agriculture, all of which thrived in the Axarquia region in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, Torre del Mar blends its coastal heritage with a lively promenade and a long stretch of beaches, making it the perfect alternative destination in the Province of Malaga.

Although it has a prime location along the Costa del Sol, close to places such as Nerja and Frigiliana, Torre del Mar is still highly underrated. Rather than luxury beach clubs and a high level of tourism, visitors can expect a relaxed local atmosphere, delicious restaurant options, and sandy beaches. If you’re looking to explore the Costa del Sol without the crowds, Torre del Mar might just be the right place for you, even though it’s relatively small.

Things to do in Torre del Mar

Walk along the promenade

One of the best ways to enjoy Torre del Mar is to walk along the promenade. The Paseo Maritimo de Poniente stretches for several kilometres, and it’s lined with playgrounds, palm trees, and plenty of cafes and seaside restaurants where you can stop for a break. The promenade is used year-round by locals for cycling, jogging, and evening strolls, so it’s always a lively part of the town. I’d recommend arriving early in the morning when the promenade is less busy and it’s easier to park.

Torre del Mar’s promenade also showcases the town’s transformation from a fishing village to a chilled coastal resort town. Along the promenade, you’ll pass by beach bars grilling seafood over open fires, handmade fishing boats, and beautiful views of the Mediterranean Sea.

Take a photo at the bandstand

Along the promenade is where you’ll find the bandstand. It’s become one of the most recognizable landmarks in Torre del Mar, apart from its iconic blue and white striped tower. It’s a favourite spot for visitors to stop and take a photo as it stands out against the palm trees that surround it. During the summer months, you may be lucky enough to come across a music festival taking place here.

Spend some time at the beach

What most people come to Torre del Mar for is to spend time at the beach. Playa de Torre del Mar stretches for almost 4 kilometres, offering plenty of space for people to go on beach walks, swim, and sunbathe. The beach is regularly awarded Blue Flag status too, for its facilities and cleanliness.

Compared to busier parts of the Costa del Sol, the beaches at Torre del Mar provide a more relaxed, local atmosphere that a lot of visitors crave. Along the beaches, you’ll find plenty of places to eat and drink, including a selection of popular chiringuitos serving freshly grilled seafood. Even if you’re only visiting the area for a day, spending some time along the beaches is a must in Torre del Mar.

Museo del Azucar

Torre del Mar may be small in size, but it still has an interesting past behind it. For a more in-depth look into the history of the region, Museo del Azucar is a great place to start. This museum in Torre del Mar is located inside an old sugar factory that was once one of the most important in the area. Torre del Mar became a key centre for processing and exporting sugarcane in the 19th and 20th centuries, and inside the museum, visitors can learn all about this industry and the development of the town.

Take part in a sport

The Costa del Sol provides some great opportunities to play sports, weather along the beach or a little inland. And Torre del Mar is no exception. The promenade includes bike lanes, sports courts, and outdoor fitness equipment, and early mornings and evenings are particularly lively due to the cooler temperatures. Water sports are also a popular option in this area, as are golf, tennis, and football. Whatever sport you’re interested in, you’ll no doubt find an opportunity to play it while spending time in Torre del Mar.

Drive to Velez-Malaga

Just a short 10-minute drive from Torre del Mar will bring you to the beautiful town of Velez-Malaga. It should take you around half a day to explore this historic town in Malaga, making it ideal for a day trip.

At the same time that Torre del Mar developed into a coastal port and fishing area, Velez-Malaga served as the region’s administrative centre for centuries. The town has a history dating back to Moorish times, if not earlier, and visitors today can explore its fortress, old town, and beautiful churches that are all within walking distance of one another. Combining both towns into your itinerary will give you a great balance of culture and coast in southern Spain.

Places to eat in Torre del Mar

Bahia Beach Jazba

One of my favourite places to eat in Torre del Mar is Bahia Beach Jazba. It’s located right along the seafront and offers visitors a relaxed beach club atmosphere paired with a unique menu that’s centred around Mediterranean cuisine with international influences. I’d recommend ordering either the falafel salad or sharing one of their paella dishes. Bahia Beach Jazba is also very well known for its drinks and cocktail menu, making it a great place to relax in the afternoon or enjoy the sunset from.

Is Torre del Mar worth visiting?

For travellers on the hunt for an authentic experience along the Costa del Sol, Torre del Mar is absolutely worth visiting. While it may not be as famous as Marbella or Nerja, its wide sandy beaches, lively promenade, and local restaurants make it a very appealing destination. From Torre del Mar, you also have easy access to nearby towns such as Velez-Malaga, where you can combine a beach trip with some Andalusian history.

Renting a car in Malaga is the best way to explore this corner of the province, regardless of what time of the year you plan to visit Spain. That way, you have the freedom to travel wherever you want on your own schedule.
