Having visited quite a few Game of Thrones filming locations in Southern Spain I was really excited to learn that the series also filmed regularly in Malta. Although we weren’t able to visit all of the filming locations for Game of Thrones in Malta, we did manage to add some of the more popular ones to our itinerary. We also found a few that are less touristy which is always a nice change.
Malta is very easy to get around either by car or public transportation. If you visit the island of Gozo the distance between the main attractions is even smaller than on the mainland. As you make your way around some of the historic cities and towns in Malta you’ll no doubt feel like you’re walking through the streets of the popular TV series.

Filming locations for Game of Thrones in Malta
Eagle Street
One of my favourite filming locations for Game of Thrones in Malta is located down a side street in Valletta. Eagle Street doesn’t feature heavily in the series so you won’t find it as busy as other well known locations. It’s used in S01 E09 when Arya is trying to trade a pigeon for bread. It’s shown just before the Hand of the King is taken to the Sept of Baelor. Make sure you add this stop to your Valletta schedule!
Fort St Angelo
Fort St Angelo is located across the harbour from Valletta in Birgu, one of the Three Cities. The best view of the fort can be seen from the Upper Barrakka Gardens which are free to enter. No tour centred around Game of Thrones in Malta is complete without at least looking at the fort from across the harbour. If you have time it’s definitely worth going inside it as well.
Fort St Angelo appears in S01 E05 when Arya is chasing a cat through the dungeons of the Red Keep and it’s also where Ned Stark is imprisoned.
Azure Window
You’ll recognize this iconic filming location for Game of Thrones on Gozo from the Dothraki wedding of Daenerys and Khal Drogo in S01 E01. If you’re planning a trip to Gozo from the mainland to see the Azure Window then you’ll be disappointed because the arch has since sadly fallen into the sea. However, the rest of Dwejra Bay has a number of unique sites to visit and it’s a great destination if you’re only spending a day on Gozo.
St Dominic’s Priory
Many people who take a day trip to Rabat don’t realize that this beautiful historic town was also used as a Game of Thrones filming location in Malta. Before heading across the bridge to Mdina, don’t forget to take a short walk out of Rabat’s town centre to St Dominic’s Priory. It costs just €5.00 to enter and you’ll be given access to most of the grounds.
In the show the priory’s courtyard is used in S01 E07 as part of the Red Keep when Ned Stark is speaking to Cersei about her incest with her brother. This is also where the iconic phrase “When you play the Game Of Thrones, you win or you die” is said.
Mdina Gate
The entrance to Mdina, also referred to as the Silent City, is probably one of the most popular filming locations for Game of Thrones in Malta. The Mdina Gate has stood for centuries but the current architecture only dates back to the 18th century. The gate is used in S01 E03 as the entrance to King’s Landing when Catelyn Stark enters for the first time in almost a decade.
To get a photo here without the crowds of people you’ll have to arrive when the tour groups aren’t there, which would be either sunrise or sunset. Please be careful though because some vehicles are allowed to cross the bridge to access Mdina.
Pjazza Mesquita
There’s another Game of Thrones filming location in Mdina that you should be aware of, even though the Mdina Gate is the most popular. Less than 5 minutes from the gate is Pjazza Mesquita. This is sometimes missed by tourists so you can expect it to be quieter than other areas of the city. This square is used twice, in S01 E03 and E05, and is where Little Finger’s brothel is located. This is one of my favourite filming locations for Game of Thrones in Malta so make sure you add it into your itinerary.
More Game of Thrones filming locations in Malta
There are many other Game of Thrones filming locations in Malta to visit such as Fort Manoel, Fort Ricasoli, and the Mtahleb Cliffs. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to visit all of them during our trip to Malta. We found all six of the locations mentioned above very easy to access and only St Dominic’s Priory and Fort St Angelo have an entry fee. San Anton Palace is another spot that was used in various Game of Thrones scenes but it’s the official residence of the Maltese president so isn’t open to the public.
