Anyone who’s visiting Transylvania for the first time will have Brasov on their list of places to visit. Brasov is one of the most popular medieval cities in Romania, and its position in the mountains makes it very picturesque. There are many interesting things to visit in Brasov, from historic monuments and quaint old town streets to artisan souvenir shops and locally run restaurants. You can easily add it to your itinerary if you’re visiting places such as Sibiu, Sighisoara, and Cluj-Napoca too.
Brasov is a popular base for day trips to historic attractions in Romania such as Bran Castle and Cantacuzino Castle, but you’ll find a lot of things to do in Brasov itself. The city’s history is strongly linked to the Teutonic Knights who founded it in the 13th century. It was later settled by the Saxons who made it one of seven walled citadels in Transylvania. The location of Brasov is also worth noting, since it sat along the intersecting trade routes that linked western Europe and the Ottoman Empire.
Many of the best things to visit in Brasov are within easy walking distance of one another, which is ideal if you’re only spending one day in Brasov. If you have time in your Romania itinerary, I’d recommend spending two full days in Brasov so you can explore some of the attractions that take more time to get to. Brasov is a beautiful city in Transylvania that you should take the time to explore at a leisurely pace.
Parking in Brasov
The city centre of Brasov is extremely busy. If you’ve rented a car in Romania, you’ll want to download the TPARK app so you can pay for parking directly from your phone using a card. You can also pay at the parking machines, but the app will save you time. The app allows you to choose what zone you’ve parked in (which you can see from signs posted on lamp posts) and pay for a set amount of time in advance.
I would avoid parking garages in Brasov if you can. We tried a couple of them and they’re incredibly narrow and usually full. Instead, I’d recommend driving around this area until you can find an available spot to park in. You may need to drive around the block a few times, but there are always people coming and going.
Things to visit in Brasov
Piața Sfatului
One of the first things to visit in Brasov is Piața Sfatului, the Council Square. This square has been used as a marketplace since the 14th century, and it’s the centre of activity in the old town. The most prominent building in the square is the Council House which was built in 1420. The majority of buildings that sit around the perimeter of the square date back to the 18th century, but you’ll find a few older ones mixed in too. Piața Sfatului is the perfect spot to start your tour of Brasov from, as it sits near many of the other main attractions in the city.
Brasov street markets
Brasov is home to a very vibrant old town. Unlike other old towns in Transylvania, this one seems more spacious and enjoyable to walk around. You’ll most likely come across a few street markets taking place in the old town when you visit. The largest one is held in Piața Sfatului and it’s where you’ll find all types of artisans selling everything from handmade clothing to souvenirs and other unique accessories. If you visit Brasov in the autumn, you’ll also come across a few Halloween-themed stalls set up here.
Strada Republicii
One of the top things to visit in Brasov is Strada Republicii. This pedestrianized street leads directly to the Council Square and it’s lined with shops and restaurants. In the past, this street would have held various markets and street fairs, so its essence is still very much alive today. This is also where you can find numerous souvenir shops, including a few that sell handmade goods.
The Black Church
The Black Church is the second largest church in Romania, and it’s one of the country’s most beautiful examples of Gothic architecture. The church dates back to the 14th century and it was built on the site of another, earlier church. Its name derives from a fire that took place in 1689 when the walls turned black due to the smoke and fire. As you make your way around the interior of The Black Church, don’t forget to look out for the biggest mechanical organ in Romania and the second largest collection of oriental carpets in the country.
Tickets for The Black Church can be purchased from the souvenir shop located directly opposite the main entrance. This is also the location of a fantastic souvenir shop in Brasov that sells goods from local artisans.
Strada Sforii
A short walk from Council Square will bring you to Strada Sforii, or Rope Street. This unique street in Brasov is one of the narrowest streets in Europe. It was built in the 15th century as a passage for firefighters who needed quick access between two of the main neighbourhoods in the city. Rope Street measures just 53 inches at its widest part and at its narrowest point you can touch both sides of the street at the same time. The street has also recently become a living piece of artwork, and visitors are encouraged to leave their own mark on the street, but only in designated areas.
Schei Gate
Less than five minutes from Rope Street is Schei Gate. It was built in 1828 to allow more traffic to move through the walls of the city. If the street isn’t busy when you visit, I’d recommend walking through the gate itself so you can admire the domed ceiling from up close. This may not be considered one of the top things to visit in Brasov, but it’s close to many other attractions so it’s worth taking a quick look at.
Beth Israel Synagogue
Nestled between Rope Street and Schei Gate is the Beth Israel Synagogue. It was built in 1901 but it was sadly severely damaged during WWII. Over 100 years after it was first built, Beth Israel Synagogue underwent a series of renovations to bring it back to its former glory. If you want to go inside the synagogue there’s a very small entry fee, but you can always take a photo from the outside of it for free. It’s one of the best things to visit in Brasov if you’re interested in historic monuments.
Catherine’s Gate
Another impressive attraction in Brasov that needs to be on your list is Catherine’s Gate. This unique gate forms part of the old defensive system of the city and it was built in 1559 to replace an older gate. It’s named after a monastery that once stood on this spot, and it’s the only original city gate from the medieval period still standing. Above the gate you can still see the city’s coat of arms too.
Tampa Mountain
Brasov sits within the Carpathian Mountains, and one of the best things to do in Brasov is to explore Tampa Mountain. This nature reserve can be accessed by cable car or by walking, and from the top you’ll have unrivalled panoramic views of Brasov. There are several interesting points of interest to visit around Tampa Mountain as well. It’s one of the top things to visit in Brasov if you have extra time on your hands.
St Nicholas Church
Although The Black Church is a key landmark in the city, there are many other beautiful churches to visit in Brasov too. St Nicholas Church is located a short walk from the main square, in the historic Schei district. The church was established in the 13th century but it’s undergone many changes since then. Next to the church is the First Romanian School which is an interesting museum based around education in Romania.
Brasov Citadel
Brasov Citadel, also referred to as Straja Hill Fortress, was a very important point of defense for the city in the medieval period. Originally a 15th century watchtower was all that stood on this hill, but by the 16th century a bastion with four towers had been added to it. What was once used by the Saxons to defend the city is now a beautifully restored landmark in Brasov that’s well known throughout Transylvania. This is another point of interest that I’d recommend visiting only if you’re spending two days in Brasov as it’s quite a distance from the old town.
Street art
If you’re looking for unique things to visit in Brasov, you can never go wrong with street art. The old town isn’t covered in street art, but you’ll find a few wall murals popping up every so often. These are generally in the newer parts of the city and they’re usually very vibrant and full of beautiful colours. Rope Street also has its fair share of unique street art to look at.
Coffee shops
One thing that Brasov isn’t short of is coffee shops. There are so many artisan coffee shops around the old town that it can be difficult to find the best ones. We visited a few during our two days in Brasov, and didn’t come across one we didn’t enjoy. Some that I would highly recommend trying are CH9 Specialty Coffee across from The Black Church, Book Coffee Shop, and Woof Street Caffe.
Medieval city walls
The medieval city walls of Brasov are incredible to see. One of the best views of the walls can be found along Promenada de sub Tâmpa, where you’ll also get a nice view of the city behind the walls. The Weavers Bastion, Hunters Tower, and Undertakers Bastion can all be found along this section of the city walls. Nearby is the History Museum of Brasov too. This entire area is one of the best things to visit in Brasov, and it’s not too overrun with tourists either.
The White Tower and the Black Tower
Opposite Tampa Mountain lies the White Tower and the Black Tower. Both of these small watchtowers were built in the 15th century, though they don’t look identical. The White Tower sits above Graft Bastion and to get to it you’ll need to climb up a very steep set of steps, but the views are worth it. Alternatively, you can take the route near the Black Tower which is still steep but doesn’t involve steps. There’s also a pathway that leads through a wooded area connecting both of the towers.
Strada După Ziduri
One of the most picturesque streets in Brasov is Strada După Ziduri. It sits at the base of the White Tower and in the 14th century it was used as the first line of defense for the city. The river that runs along the street made it difficult for attackers to cross, which is why the defensive wall was built right next to it. Today, visitors can still walk along the base of the wall, but the street is more welcoming than it was in the medieval period.
Graft Bastion
At one end of Strada După Ziduri sits the Graft Bastion. It was built in the early 16th century to help soldiers get from the White Tower to the town. After some renovations at the turn of the 21st century, Graft Bastion is now home to a few collections from the Brasov Historical Museum on two of its floors. This bastion is one of the best things to visit in Brasov for people interested in military history.
View of Brasov from the White Tower
There are a lot of amazing viewpoints in Brasov to take advantage of. One of the best views, though, comes from the White Tower. From here you can see the entire layout of Brasov’s old town, with Tampa Mountain as the backdrop. It’s especially nice near sunset when there’s a golden glow on the rooftops.
A similar view can be seen from the Black Tower where you’ll be a bit closer to The Black Church. Make sure you add this area to your list of things to visit in Brasov before you leave.
Souvenir shops in Brasov
There are numerous souvenir shops in Brasov, but many sell very cheap and mass-manufactured items. Transylvania is home to incredible artisans, so it’d be a shame if you didn’t take some handmade souvenirs home with you.
Hidden down a back alley off of Strada Republicii is Minivers where you can find a nice selection of handmade gifts. Across from The Black Church is INSPIRATIO (where you purchase tickets for the church). They have a huge selection of handcrafted gifts and souvenirs that are mainly from Brasov and the surrounding region, so there’s a big spotlight on local artisans here.
Places to eat in Brasov
Artegianale
One of the best places to eat in Brasov if you like authentic Italian food is Artegianale. The interior is absolutely stunning, and from the street you can watch the chefs at work, making everything from scratch using local ingredients.
I’d recommend ordering a couple of cocktails to go with your starters, or a nice glass of local wine. The Trio di Formaggio fritto is fantastic if you’re a cheese enthusiast, and it’s big enough to share.
What Artegianale is really known for is their fresh pasta. All of their pasta is made on-site and they have a very big variety on the menu. The Cacio e Pepe and the Ravioli with truffle and mushroom sauce are both high on my list of the best pasta I’ve ever eaten. Alternatively, their stone baked pizzas are equally worth ordering. While you’re in Brasov you might as well treat yourself to a full meal, so ordering a dessert at Artegianale is a must too.
Mamaliguta
If you’re looking for a good restaurant in Brasov that serves traditional Romanian food, you can’t beat Mamaliguta. This restaurant sits along Strada Republicii and offers both indoor and outdoor seating. Our waiter recommended sitting inside and I’m glad we did because the decor is amazing and very in keeping with the traditional menu.
While you’re in Romania, you should try at least a few traditional dishes, and this is a great place to do that. The Sarmale, Ciorba de Fasole, and Mici were all cooked to perfection and are great for sharing if you want to try out a few different dishes in one sitting. If you’re not sure what to order for drinks and dessert, don’t be scared to ask your waiter because ours was extremely helpful and really improved our dining experience.
Omelett
Wondering where to go for breakfast in Brasov? Omelett is a very popular breakfast and brunch spot in Brasov, with a menu that’s based around fresh and local ingredients sourced from small businesses and farmers. Everything from the main dishes to the cakes, dressings, and juices are all prepared by the team at Omelett, so everything is as fresh as possible.
Each of their main dishes starts with eggs as the centre and from there they add fresh ingredients to create something uniquely inspired that you won’t find on any other menu. Plus, each dish is based off of a movie which is a fun twist. The Folded Eggs were a favourite of mine, and I’d recommend pairing it with one of their freshly blended smoothies to start your day in a healthy way. Omelett also offers vegan alternatives and they can cater to different dietary requirements.
Sub Tampa
The perfect way to end a day in Brasov is by dining at Sub Tampa. This unique restaurant is located at the base of Tampa Mountain, which is one of the top things to visit in Brasov. The menu here is based on neo-traditional Transylvanian cuisine. This means that they use traditional recipes and infuse them with modern techniques and culinary delights specifically from Brasov. The interior of Sub Tampa is gorgeous and is meant to blend in with the surrounding nature tones.
There are a lot of tasty options on the menu at Sub Tampa, and each dish uses local ingredients where possible. Both the Bran Gold and the Buffalo Burrata are tasty options for starters, though I’d recommend sharing the Bran Gold because it’s a lot of cheese. If you want to try a unique regional dish for your main, then the Buck Tenderloin is a must which is served with sweet potatoes and raspberry sauce. Or, if you’re not feeling too adventurous, the Chicken Breast with wild rice, garlic spinach, and sage sauce is also a popular choice.
For dessert, you can’t go wrong with the Traditional Romanian Pudding which we were told is a favourite dessert among locals. Overall, Sub Tampa is the perfect place to eat in Brasov if you want a refined dining experience where you can try plenty of regional dishes with a modern twist.
Where to stay in Brasov
Luxury GLAM Apartments & Studios
Being one of the most popular cities in Romania means that Brasov can be quite busy at times. If you want to escape the bustling atmosphere of the old town, I’d recommend booking an apartment with Luxury GLAM Apartments & Studios. The apartment building is located near the Coresi Shopping Center, so it takes no more than 20 minutes to drive to it from the old town. They have a variety of apartment options available on their website to cater to different group sizes and needs.
Our luxury apartment in Brasov had one bedroom with a large bathtub and walk-in shower in the same room. Down the hall was a second bathroom with another walk-in shower and a toilet. The apartment also featured a very spacious living and dining room, and it included kitchen accessories for cooking. It can be difficult to find modern and spacious accommodation in Brasov, so this was a bonus for us.
A big feature of our apartment was the enormous private balcony. The balcony has a comfortable seating area as well as a jacuzzi. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to use the jacuzzi, but in the summer months this would be great to use. From the balcony you get a lovely view of Tampa Mountain in the distance as well.
Luxury GLAM Apartments & Studios is the perfect option for accommodation in Brasov, whether you’re planning a short or long term stay in the city. Each apartment has its own parking space, and for checking in you’ll be provided with an access code so you can show up at your own convenience. There are a lot of things to visit in Brasov, so having a good place to base yourself from is very important.
