Car rental prices can often seem unpredictable, especially when you’re using different websites to find the best deal. Some searches can show a great offer, only for it to double by the time you click through and come to the final price page. I’ve booked cars in several countries during my travels, and I’ve learned how to navigate car rental costs fairly well. Understanding how pricing works and using the right tools to compare them are key to success, regardless of where you’re renting from.

Platforms like DiscoverCars.com are perfect for searching multiple rental company websites all at once. You can filter out hidden fees, easily compare prices, view only automatic vehicles, and see which companies offer unlimited mileage as part of the fee. This can save you a huge amount of time and money during the trip-planning stage.

Here’s how to save on car rental costs in just 10 easy steps, without sacrificing quality or reliability.

1. Book as early as possible

One of the best ways to save on car rental costs is by booking early. As availability decreases, prices tend to increase, especially in peak seasons. For example, a car rental in Spain can often triple in price in the summer compared to the winter months. However, try not to book too early without flexibility, as prices can be higher if booked more than 3 months ahead of your planned travel period.

On DiscoverCars.com, many of the deals include free cancellation up to 48 hours before you’re due to pick up your car. This means you can rebook later if you find that prices have dropped.

2. Don’t just look at daily rates

Many people can get caught by additional charges such as location fees, taxes, or insurance. When I’m looking at rental cars, I always look at the final total price rather than the daily rates. This is very easy to do when using a comparison platform, as it helps you to see all the costs upfront without needing to click through to the payment page.

3. Compare airport vs. city centre pickups

I’ve read a lot online about avoiding airport pickups because they can include hidden surcharges. For me, this hasn’t been the case. I always choose to pick up from the airport for convenience purposes. I often find that prices in the city centre are much higher because they have smaller fleets available. To be on the safe side, make sure you compare airport and city centre options to see where the best deal lies.

If you think you need to pick up a rental car from the city centre because you’ve arrived by bus or train, it might be worthwhile checking nearby airport prices. This will let you see if getting to the airport by public transportation to pick up a car will save you money.

4. Choose the right insurance

One of the biggest car rental costs comes from insurance. I use my own insurance provider for rentals, so I always need to leave a big deposit on my card at the pickup counter. If you want to purchase insurance at the time of booking, I’d recommend doing so online. At the counter, rental companies can be quite pushy and make you feel like you have to purchase the most expensive package available.

By comparing options on DiscoverCars.com, you can either include insurance in advance or choose full coverage at the counter. The choice is up to you. Do some research beforehand so you don’t feel overwhelmed at the pickup office.

5. Use a comparison platform for more flexibility

It may seem easier to book with a rental car company directly, but it’s very rare to find a better deal this way. I’ve only booked a handful of times directly, without the flexibility to cancel, and have lost quite a bit of money due to changes in my travel plans. Using comparison platforms lets you:

  • See the total price
  • Compare different suppliers
  • Filter by fuel policy, insurance, and free cancellation options
  • Read real customer ratings

This takes the guesswork out of the equation and prevents you from overpaying.

6. Don’t be afraid to look at different car types

Compact cars are usually cheaper to rent than large SUVs. They’re also more fuel-efficient and easier to park in countries where narrow streets and small underground parking garages are the norm. Unless you really need a larger vehicle, downsizing is a great way to save on car rental costs. In some instances, larger vehicles may be cheaper than compact cars, depending on availability. If that’s the case, then you may want to consider upgrading.

7. Remember to check fuel policies

One of the biggest tips I can give you to save on car rental costs is to choose a “full-to-full” fuel policy. This is the most travel-friendly option, as some cheaper looking deals will have an expensive refuelling charge added into your price. On DiscoverCars.com, fuel policies can be filtered into your search.

When picking up and returning your car, always take a photo of the fuel gauge. This acts as proof if a car rental company claims they gave you a full tank and they didn’t, or if they claim you didn’t return the car with a full fuel tank. This has been an issue for me a couple of times, but the car rental companies always return my money when I send photos to them.

8. Eliminate hidden costs with filters

Filters is where comparison platforms really work in your favour. When searching for the best car rental costs, always filter thing such as:

  • Excellent supplier ratings
  • Transparent pricing options
  • Free cancellation
  • Full-to-full fuel policy

This will allow you to focus on companies that have fair terms, and it eliminates risky deals and dodgy dealers.

9. Check payment and deposit requirements

It’s now very common for rental companies to block large amounts on your credit card if you don’t take our their insurance policy. This can have a big impact on your travel budget so it’s something to think about ahead of time. When possible, ensure your credit card is either completely paid off or has enough money left on it to use freely, after the deposit is taken. Depending on the company, this deposit can take up to 30 days to be returned, which is why people sometimes opt to purchase car insurance at the counter, to lessen the deposit amount.

Rental companies generally require a specific payment method, such as credit cards, or they charge extra for debit usage. DiscoverCars lets you see these conditions upfront, before you book, so you’re not surprised at the counter during pickup.

10. Recheck prices over and over again

Even if you think you’ve found the best deal, it doesn’t hurt to recheck prices before your trip. If you booked with free cancellation, you can cancel and rebook at a lower rate without any penalties. With DiscoverCars, for example, you have until 48 hours before your booking starts to take advantage of free cancellation.

I’ve saved quite a bit of money rebooking car rentals, especially in off-peak seasons when demand isn’t as high so rental companies offer cheaper rates at the last minute. This is one of the best ways to save on car rental costs, and a lot of people don’t even realize.

Final thoughts: Saving on car rental costs in 2026

Saving money on car rentals doesn’t come down to one or two tricks – it’s about making smart decisions, knowing when the right time to book is, and avoiding hidden fees. For me, the biggest change came from using comparison websites. DiscoverCars.com makes it clear to understand pricing and offers transparent comparisons, which saves a lot of time overall. If you’re planning your next trip and aren’t sure how to find the best rental car costs, it’s worth spending a bit of extra time comparing your options properly.
